There In No Means Of Avoiding A Total Collapse In The West

There is no means of avoiding a total collapse in the West; at the first train station in 2008, the financial system went bust but didn’t die, at the next station nations will go bust (though this could take 5-10 years or less), but first they will print money as this is the most politically tenable option, and ultimately the world will go to war.

Oil: The Supply And Demand

The supply and demand characteristics of oil are great due to the need for oil in China, India, rest of Asia.

Oil is the top priority for China, as they are now a net importer.

The Drivers Of Growth In The Emerging World

The drivers of growth in the emerging world will be the urbanization of India and China; stocks won’t necessarily rise in the short term, but there will be significant growth in Asia in the long run.

The shift in economic power from West to East has been remarkable in speed, largely due to the rapid industrialization of the emerging world and the speed at which information travels today.

High Volatility, US Economy And Gold

In the environment of money-printing and high volatility that exists in the US and that will be created by future policy, physical gold is the best thing to own.

Emerging Markets Are Not Saturated And They Are Growing Rapidly

“People still think of emerging market economies as poor cousins, but because 80% of the world’s people are here, in aggregate the consumption is huge. These are not saturated markets and they are growing rapidly.

Everybody should have 50 percent of their money in the emerging world, outside the West. People should also keep the custody of their assets overseas."

The US Economy Is Losing Its Preponderance

As for the US being the most important economy for the world, there is a sea change going on right now. Recently car sales in emerging economies such as Brazil and China are outpacing those of the US, Europe and Japan. Oil consumption in emerging markets is increasing, while in the developed world it is contracting; the whole world does not depend on American consumption anymore – 60% of total exports are now going to the emerging world when one includes E. Europe.

The US is still a large economy but it is not growing, while the growth in the emerging world is and will continue to be strong.

When You Print Money, The Masses Do Not Benefit

When you print money the masses don`t benefit. But what can happen to stocks if interest rates stay at zero forever, and by zero forever I mean, even if the Federal Reserve increases the Fed funds rate to 5 percent, if at that time the rate of inflation is 10 percent, we are still at -5% (in real terms). Then stocks and especially precious metals can go into the sky.

Marc Faber is an international investor known for his uncanny predictions of the stock market and futures markets around the world.

15 May, 2010

Market Manipulation And Front Running

I think the Federal Reserve basically through keeping interest rates at zero is manipulating markets to some extent, and as you know we had these stimulus packages and quantitative easing by central banks including the ECB at the present time. So they come in and basically buy assets that are not particularly of the highest quality and this is some kind of market manipulation.

The market was manipulated in the US housing sector through Fannie Mae (Public, NYSE:FNM) and Freddie Mac (Public, NYSE:FRE) for years and years. So, to think that we have perfect markets is wrong. What we have are markets where there is very strong government intervention and where there could be also some front running.

The Problem Of Democracies Is That Governments Want To Be Re-Elected

One of the problems of democracies is that governments want to be re-elected. Its all about their own power. Its not to do what is good for the people. Its about power, to stay in power and to keep people in line, basically.

What you do is if you have a Greece, Portugal, Spain, or if you have California and you have fiscal problems, economic problems, or Fannie Mae (FNM) or Freddie Mac (FRE) instead of letting them go bust, which is the right thing to do, you bail out the system with tax payers money. Because someone has to pay for it. You can`t just deny the fact that bad loans occur.

I Think We Have Reached An Intermediate Top

I think we have reached an intermediate top at the end of April. But who knows? Many things can happen. We will have to wait a few days to see how the rebound unfolds. I think a rebound to 1180 is quite possible. Between 1180 to 1200 on the S&P, there will be a lot of resistance, so to go through it will be difficult.

Now it could be, and this is not what I believe, but it could be, that the markets make a marginally new high, like if you look at the lows, between October 2008 and March 2009, the orthodox low, when the market had the most new lows for the year was in October 2008. The March 2009 low was lower on the S&P 500 but the number of new lows had diminished. So the peak in new highs is likely to have been at the end of April.

In The Short Term You Bet Along With Central Banks

In the short term you bet along with central banks and long term they all are going to go to the toilette. That I am convinced of. The next big crisis will really shake up the system. But the next crisis may be coming in 5 to 10 years time. And between if you print enough money, markets could go up very strongly.

High Frequency Trading And Computer Models

Basically 70 percent of the trading volume is high frequency computer trading. In other words, the computers are programmed to do certain things and they largely follow a trend, its basically a momentum play. But when the trend changes, the computer programs adjust.

An autopilot in an airplane will keep the plane on course, but the computer program keeps esseentially the trend going until there is an airpocket. And once there is an airpocket the positions can be reversed very quickly. And so you have these huge moves in the market.

Individual Investors Lose Money On This Market Volatility

With the kind of volatility we have, people lose money. Either they are long, they sell and then the market rebounds strongly and they are short and so forth. So they lose their patience, they give up, they think the market is rigged by the big boys and that may be the case in some instances.

It Would be A Mistake To Think That The Bailout Is Actually A Bailout Of Greece

The ECB has talked more hawkish than the Federal Reserve but basically they are all money printers. Some are better at it, and faster and have more efficient machines the others are slower but basically central banks, they run a print and print.

And it would be a mistake to think that the bailout is actually a bailout of Greece. Greece is a write-off. You can`t have the kind of debt Greece has with Olive Oil income. They have no industries to speak of. They have shipping but the shipping industy does not pay taxes in Greece.

So basically the bailout is actually a bailout of the ECB itself because they already have a lot of paper of Spain, portugal and Greece in their portfolio and a bailout of the banks in Europe. They lent money to Greece, Spain and Portugal, so they are all in the same boat.

The Cause Of The Sell Off Is That Markets Run Up Too Much, Too Quickly

"I don`t think Greece is the cause of the sell off. I believe its a catalyst but the cause of the sell off is that markets run up too much, too quickly. In other words, most emerging markets were up more then 100% from the March lows and the S&P 500 was up more then 80%, and as I have argued we would see a 20% to 30% correction this year. Anyway, it just happened that this 20% correction happened in 10 days."

US Dollar And The Euro

The US dollar became very oversold last November when the Euro went to 1.5100. The Euro at that time was overpriced and since then the Euro has weakened very considerably as you know, today its at 1.3300 (1.2770, on May 6). I think this is about fair value vis-a-vis the US dollar. But I think the Euro will continue to drift lower because markets are that way, they overshoot and then they undershoot. So I think that for a while the dollar may still rise somewhat.

All Western Governments Will Have To Be Bailed Out.

I can tell you, all governments will eventually have to be bailed out in the western world. Its either going to be through money printing, as I think, or default. They are over indebted, especially if you consider the unfunded liabilities like future pensions, social security, medicare, medicaid and so forth.

It does not add up, they will all default or they will all print money. But the outcome won`t be pretty, that I can assure you.
